The most useful thing you can do when approaching Ilmu Gendam is get a clear map of the territory before you begin. Many students arrive having heard one or two names — Mataram Gendam, Animal Magnetism, Javanese Hypnosis — and are uncertain how these relate to each other, whether they are the same thing, different things, or competing traditions. The answer is: they are all streams within the same science. And understanding the map prevents a great deal of confusion.
In the previous article we established that Ilmu Gendam is the science — the overarching field — not a specific practice. Here we map every major stream within that science: what each one is, what it specifically addresses, and how it relates to the others.
The Javanese Lineage Streams
The most systematically organised stream of Ilmu Gendam. Named for the Mataram Sultanate where its core mantra lineages and transmission protocols were codified, Mataram Gendam is organised into five progressive levels covering personal magnetism, healing transmission, energised object work, manifestation, and master-level teaching capacity. It is the broadest-scope and most accessible entry point into authentic Gendam practice for contemporary students. Proper initiation is required at each level. Earlier levels can be initiated remotely; advanced levels benefit from in-person transmission.

A specific court lineage within Ilmu Gendam focused on the development of kewibawaan — kingly magnetic authority. Where Mataram covers broad scope, Rajadewa concentrates its development specifically on the quality of commanding presence that produces arrested attention and deep receptivity in others without visible technique. It is transmission-based rather than level-based, unfolding relationally through the teacher-student relationship. The Rajadewa mantra set is distinct from Mataram's. Core transmission requires in-person contact. Most effectively studied after a Mataram or general Ilmu Gendam foundation is established.

The Western Parallel Streams
These are not Javanese traditions — but they address the same fundamental phenomenon through different cultural frameworks. Understanding them alongside the Javanese streams reveals something important: the magnetic capacity of the human being is not a cultural artifact of one civilisation. It is a real phenomenon that was independently discovered and developed on multiple continents.
The European tradition of magnetic influence developed by Franz Anton Mesmer (1734–1815) and his successors. Animal Magnetism holds that the human being possesses a subtle magnetic quality that can be developed, directed, and used to produce states of heightened receptivity and healing in others. The parallels with Ilmu Gendam are striking: both work with the concept of a developed practitioner's magnetic field; both produce characteristic trance-like states in recipients; both involve specific cultivation practices. The key differences are the absence of mantra technology in the Western tradition and its development within a materialist scientific framework rather than an esoteric-religious one. A serious student of either tradition finds the other illuminating.

The modern Western tradition of working with trance states and heightened receptivity for therapeutic purposes. Clinical hypnotherapy developed historically from Animal Magnetism — James Braid coined the term "hypnosis" in 1843 as a secular, non-magnetic explanation for the phenomena Mesmer had produced. The therapeutic approach is primarily verbal and cognitive: linguistic inductions, suggestion protocols, Ericksonian patterns. A Gendam practitioner would describe hypnotherapy as working with the Gendam phenomenon exclusively through the cognitive dimension, without the energetic cultivation that characterises the Javanese streams. The two approaches are complementary — the Gendam practitioner's developed field makes all subsequent therapeutic suggestion more effective.

The Unifying Principle — What All of These Share
Every stream listed above — from folk-level Javanese amulet practice to Ericksonian hypnotherapy — shares a single underlying insight: the human being has a magnetic quality that produces effects on other humans, and this quality can be intentionally developed.
Different traditions have used different metaphors for this quality. Pancaran in Javanese. Kesaktian in older Javanese frameworks. "Animal magnetism" or "magnetic fluid" in the 18th-century Western tradition. "Rapport" and "trance" in modern hypnotherapy. "Presence" in contemporary leadership and performance literature. All of these are pointing at the same phenomenon — some more accurately than others, some more effectively cultivated than others.
The Javanese lineage streams — particularly Mataram and Rajadewa — represent the most systematically developed approaches to deliberately cultivating this quality. That is why serious students of any of the other streams often find that Mataram or Rajadewa training produces step-changes in their capacity that no amount of additional technique work in their original tradition achieves.
