Level 2 is where Mataram Gendam becomes a healing modality. Here is what pengobatan is, how it works, who it is for, and what Level 1 development is required before it becomes effective.
The five levels of Mataram Gendam each expand the practitioner's capacity in a specific direction. Level 1 builds the personal magnetic field — the pancaran that makes everything else possible. Level 2 takes that developed field and adds a new dimension: the ability to direct it into another person's body and energetic system with the intention of healing.
This is called pengobatan in the Javanese tradition — literally "treatment" or "medicine-work." It is the Mataram system's formal healing application, and it is one of the primary reasons clinical practitioners (hypnotherapists, energy workers, bodyworkers, counsellors) seek out Mataram training. A practitioner with genuine Level 2 capacity produces clinical results that their existing training does not explain — and that they consistently attribute to the change in what they bring into the room before technique begins.
Level 2 is the first level that adds an outward-directed capacity — a skill applied to another person. Levels 1 through 2 are the most commonly studied levels, and together they represent a complete and self-contained practice for the majority of students: personal magnetism and presence (Level 1) combined with healing transmission capacity (Level 2).
Pengobatan is the directed application of the practitioner's developed field into another person's body and energetic system. It is not massage. It is not needles or manipulation. It is not verbal suggestion alone. It is the practitioner directing cultivated tenaga — vital force — through specific hand positions, intention, and breath, into the recipient, with the specific aim of clearing energetic obstruction and supporting the body's natural healing processes.
"In the Javanese understanding, illness — physical, emotional, psychological — has an energetic dimension. Pengobatan addresses that dimension directly."
The practical question is: what does this mean in a session? The practitioner works with the recipient in a relaxed, receptive state — typically lying down or seated. The practitioner's hands are positioned at or near the body (both contact and non-contact work are used). Specific breath patterns and mantras are employed to direct the field. The recipient frequently experiences warmth, tingling, involuntary movement, deep relaxation, and emotional release. Outcomes reported by practitioners and recipients include: pain reduction, accelerated recovery from physical complaints, significant emotional processing, and — particularly notable for clinical practitioners — enhanced effectiveness of any verbal therapy or counselling delivered afterward, because the recipient is in a more genuinely receptive state than verbal induction alone typically achieves.
Level 2 cannot be effectively practised without a genuine Level 1 foundation. This is not a bureaucratic rule — it is a practical reality. Pengobatan works because the practitioner's field is directed into the recipient. If the practitioner's field is underdeveloped, there is nothing meaningful to direct. The hands move through the right positions, the mantra is engaged, the breath pattern is followed — but the transmission lacks energetic substance. The recipient may experience a pleasant relaxation, but not the characteristic effects of genuine pengobatan.
This is why experienced energy practitioners who begin Mataram training are typically recommended to spend genuine time with Level 1 before moving to Level 2, even if they are eager to access the healing level. Six months of consistent Level 1 practice before Level 2 initiation produces genuinely more capable Level 2 practitioners than those who rush the foundation.
Recipients of pengobatan from practitioners with genuine Level 2 development consistently report a characteristic set of experiences: significant warmth at the practitioner's hand positions even when there is no physical contact; involuntary physical sensations (tingling, pulsing, heaviness or lightness); deep involuntary relaxation; emotional material surfacing and processing without verbal prompting; and, after the session, a quality of mental clarity and felt wellbeing that persists for hours or days.
Pain responses — both chronic and acute — are one of the most consistently reported areas of improvement. This is not claimed as a medical intervention. It is reported as a practitioner-verified clinical observation across many years of pengobatan work.
The Level 2 initiation can be received after genuine Level 1 development — typically six months or more of consistent daily practice following Level 1 initiation. The Level 2 initiation includes the new mantra transmission and the specific pengobatan technique instruction. Saket Rai assesses Level 1 development before transmitting Level 2. See the Mataram Gendam course page for how to begin.
For clinical hypnotherapists specifically, Level 2 offers something no amount of additional verbal training provides: genuine energetic healing capacity that operates before and alongside the verbal dimension of the session. A Level 2 hypnotherapist begins the session with pengobatan — bringing the recipient into a receptive state through energetic transmission — before any verbal induction begins. The depth and quality of trance achieved this way consistently exceeds what verbal induction alone produces. The therapeutic suggestion that follows lands in a more genuinely open system. Results are faster and more durable.
This integration of pengobatan and clinical hypnotherapy is one of the specific synthesis approaches taught in Saket Rai's advanced programmes. It represents the meeting of the Javanese healing tradition and the Western clinical tradition at their most practically effective intersection.
